But beneath the viral nickname is an ingredient with a far less sensational name and a surprisingly legitimate medical history: PDRN.

Short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, PDRN is a purified collection of DNA fragments traditionally extracted from salmon or trout. Before beauty brands began bottling it into serums, doctors were already using it in regenerative medicine to promote wound healing and tissue repair. Then, in recent years, the ingredient made the leap from clinics to cosmetic counters, becoming one of K-beauty’s biggest exports and the latest obsession of skincare devotees everywhere.

The first thing to know is that, despite the internet’s best efforts, you are not rubbing marine-derived reproductive cells onto your face. The DNA used to create PDRN undergoes extensive purification before becoming a cosmetic or medical ingredient. The nickname may have helped the trend go viral, but it is scientifically inaccurate.

So what’s with the hype? Researchers believe PDRN helps support the skin’s natural repair mechanisms. The injectable treatments used in dermatology clinics have the strongest body of evidence behind them because the ingredient is delivered directly into the skin. Today, topical products, including the flood of PDRN serums, ampoules, sheet masks, and moisturizers now filling beauty shelves. However, topical PDRN isn’t trying to replicate an in-office procedure. Instead, it has found its place as a skin-supporting ingredient that works alongside the rest of your routine. Many formulas pair it with hydrating and barrier-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, peptides, or niacinamide, making them particularly appealing for anyone dealing with dryness, irritation, or skin that simply feels a little run down.
