Your Favorite Celebrity Is a Walking Red Flag—And That’s Okay

sorry not sorry

We all have that one celebrity—maybe two—that captivates us to an almost obsessive degree, prompting us to wonder if we’re channeling Joe Goldberg from You more than we’d care to admit. It’s not just that they simply catch our attention—they hijack it with every chaotic move. Whether they’re always up to no good or they’ve just dropped the most unhinged statement that makes the world do a double take, there’s a certain allure to their behavior that makes us unable to look away, even when we know we probably should.

So, what’s the deal with our fascination with these drama kings and queens we’d normally steer clear from in real life? You could argue that it’s a reminder that they’re still human, prone to the same mistakes as the rest of us. On the other hand, it could simply be the sheer audacity of their actions—the unpredictability and the chaos—that keeps us hooked as they act on impulses we’d usually suppress. Perhaps they tap into a wild, unfiltered side of ourselves that’s both thrilling and terrifying to watch.

Take Egyptian hit singer and actor Mohamed Ramadan for example. We can all collectively agree that he’s provided us with some bangers over the years. His songs have an irresistible pull, compelling us to dance tirelessly at weddings, events, or any celebratory occasion, instantly elevating our serotonin levels. But we can’t ignore the fact that his personality often drives some—if not most—of us a little insane. While everyone loves a confident, unapologetic character, there’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance. And knowing that the artist can get away with it only adds to the complexity of our fascination with them.

A walking controversy, Ramadan has found himself entangled in more than one scandal since the start of his career. While his behavior often draws sharp criticism— especially for being provocative— his continuous refusal to back down can arguably explain some of the intrigue he generates. Sure, he can be flashy, and when we see it in the average person, we’d certainly get the ick. But for someone in the public eye, who has to watch every move out of fear of being canceled, it’s his general approach to life—essentially following the “do first, maybe apologize later” philosophy— that makes him, oddly enough, so hard to ignore.

And in a society quick to criticize those who stand out, fans see him as someone who dares to do what the average netizen wouldn’t—completely unbothered by what others think, while the rest of us are over here tiptoeing around every little decision we’re considering. For example, in 2019, he was involved in a controversial incident where he posted a photo of himself in the cockpit of a private flight—a place he arguably had no business being in. This action obviously led to a pilot being banned from flying for life. Admittedly, this was a reckless act, yet it paradoxically commands a certain respect…at least from the most “alpha” of us out there.

As for Amr Diab, the undisputed king of Egyptian pop music, he’s still around, making sure we always have enough new hits to keep us going throughout the year. However, his real-life persona is almost a copy/paste of Ramadan’s—both seemingly unbothered by criticism, consistently serving up content, and somehow managing to stay relevant, despite the buzz surrounding them.

For decades, Diab’s love-infused songs have enchanted us, turning many into hopeless romantics. However, the reality behind the music reveals a stark contrast to the dreamy image portrayed in his lyrics. His tumultuous personal history with relationships speaks volumes. Sure, no relationship is perfect and everyone has their flaws, but Diab’s track record with love—and particularly with healthy breakups—leaves much to be desired. Additionally, his aggressive behavior toward fans cannot be overlooked. And let’s not forget his aggressive behavior toward fans. Recently, the 63-year-old singer was tried for slapping someone at a wedding he attended, starkly contradicting the romantic persona his songs project. Even so, his fans continue to sing his praises (literally), almost like they’ve decided that his music is worth looking past all the mess he gets caught up in. Think what you want, but the man knows how to keep people talking, in both good and bad ways.

Speaking of love and bad breakups, Taylor Swift has been a master at reclaiming her narrative. For years, the media has labeled her “serial dater” and ridiculed her for allegedly using the breakdown of her relationships as fodder for her next album. Typically, someone who frequently has new partners would be judged as “bad news”—or worse, “emotionally unstable.” Yet, Swift’s fans, affectionately known as Swifties, see it in a different light. They celebrate her for living authentically, even if that means having more relationships than what might be considered typical. After all, isn’t she just living her life on her own terms—and giving us decent music while she’s at it?

Having become a full-on ambassador of the “Who cares if you’re too much?” movement, Swift unapologetically wears her heart on her sleeve, turning vulnerability into a strength, as well as into a slew of chart-topping tracks. Whether it’s through her lyrics, interviews, or public appearances, she’s forged an emotional connection with her fans that’s hard to replicate. Sure, some may see her as a walking red flag—calling her petty for writing songs about exes and airing personal drama to millions around the world. But while she might embody some of the traits we’d side-eye in others, she’s proven that you can be wildly successful, immensely talented, and still have quirks not everyone finds charming. And you know what? That’s more than okay—it’s human.

So, there you have it—these “walking red flags” like Ramadan, Diab, and Swift have us hooked, not just on their art but on their wonderfully chaotic personalities. They may be a bit contradictory, but perhaps that’s exactly why we love them. Maybe it’s because we humans are inherently complicated, and for some bizarre reason, we find perfection boring, quirks intriguing, and microdosing on toxicity and drama oddly entertaining—Unless, of course, you’re the pilot Ramadan got banned, the fan Diab slapped, or the ex nursing a heartbreak courtesy of Swift; but that’s beside the point.
