A Guide to Some of Egypt’s Most Magical Beach Destinations

From Sinai to the North Coast, there are plenty of options to choose from

When it comes to Egypt, there is an endless stream of adventures for thrill-seekers to discover and enjoy. Anyone that has visited the somewhat unhinged (in the best way possible) country can attest to the fact that you will be constantly entertained without even realizing it. Just the simple act of walking down the street can lead to a series of interactions, pleasant or not, that will end up being memorable one way or another. There is always something happening, everywhere, from the tiniest little corners of Cairo and local food gems to Great Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of Kings in Aswan. Exploring everything the historically and culturally rich country has to offer is endless.

But the beaches are something else entirely– the varying hues of blue, the soft golden sand, and the feeling of the Egyptian sun glaring into your summer-deprived soul is unmatched. The country is home to some of the most enchanting waters and magical coastlines, and what makes it all the more special is that there is something to cater to everyone. Want to party on the beach from day to night as you eat an abundance of fresca? Head to the North Coast or Hurghada. When all else fails in life and you’re aching to escape, to vacation amongst nomads and free souls, or scuba dive in the clearest of waters, visit Sinai and be healed.

Nothing beats sitting on that white, plastic beach chair, with a slight sunburn across your cheeks and nose, your drink of choice in hand, sand in places that would usually be uncomfortable (if you weren’t too relaxed to care), and your music of choice blaring from your speaker— I personally wait all year for this moment right here. Nonetheless, behold the ultimate list of beaches for anyone considering to experience an Egyptian summer, we got you covered.

Dahab, Sinai

Situated on the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula, Dahab, which translates to “gold” is definitely one of Egypt’s treasures. Magical in its essence, the coastal town won’t offer you materialistic luxuries, but it certainly will provide you the richness your soul needs. Dahab initially started off as a Bedouin fishing village, but by the 1960’s, in accordance with the rest of the world, during a time of flower power and all things peace and love, it became a safe haven for the free souls. The peaceful town is home to some of the best scuba diving spots in the country, most notably the infamous Blue Hole– not for the faint of heart. Take a boat ride to the surrounding hidden beaches, a camel ride, or a night amongst the fellow Bedouins of Sinai amidst the Peninsula’s captivating mountains— Dahab is oh-so-special.

North Coast

To many Egyptians, summer means Sahel (Arabic word for “coast”). Situated on Egypt’s North Coast, the beach town is a strip of resorts and compounds between Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh. What started off with humble beginnings and a simple means to spend your summer, is no longer due to the ongoing questionable development of the area that has changed its landscape slightly, but there is no denying that it is still home to some of the bluest waters and the best sunsets you will probably see in Egypt. Mainly a destination for families, the growing infrastructure of the beach town has led it to also become the party destination of the summer. For all the techno and house fiends, you’ll find one of Beirut’s most loved party venues AHM, and many others that have welcomed DJ’s from all around the world. Although it may be a bit excessive, does it really matter when you’re sitting on a beautiful beach?

Hurghada

Hurghada is the middle ground between Sinai and the North Coast. Whether you’re looking for a simple getaway or seeking to step it up a notch, you’ll find it here. Also situated amongst Egypt’s Red Sea Coast, Hurghada has some of the most sublime beaches. You can head to the city’s cozy residential town, El-Gouna, and get yourself a yacht to explore the water and its many wonders, including the breathtaking Tawila Island. You can also head to Hurghada’s Giftun Islands, which is home to Egypt’s Orange Bay– definitely a sight for sore eyes.

Marsa Alam

Another picturesque town located in South-Eastern Egypt, Marsa Alam is known for its clear waters. Many claim that scuba diving in the resort town is the most tranquil diving experience due to the clarity of the water. With designated scuba spots, Marsa Alam’s waters are adventurous as much as they are beautiful. From shipwrecks, turtles, and coral gardens, to swimming with dolphins, Marsa Alam is perfect for anyone that enjoys the thrill of being submerged under water.
