The origins of the kaftan can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, where it served as an easy, functional hot-weather garment for men and women alike. These early tunics were typically made of wool or silk and were loose-fitting with long sleeves. The kaftan spread across the Middle East and Central Asia through trade routes, quickly gaining popularity among various ethnic groups, including the Ottomans, Persians, and Mughals. In the Middle East and North Africa, the garment also had a significant presence, often worn during special occasions such as weddings and special holidays, with variations in style and decoration influenced by local traditions and culture.
Today, the kaftan continues to be worn in many parts of the world, both as a traditional garment and as a fashion statement and in recent years, a number of homegrown labels, such as Abadia, Bouguessa, and Dima Ayad, have sprouted in the Arab world, offering a selection of contemporary traditional options for their customers that merge the present with the region’s rich past and cultural heritage. While the flowy garment maintains its cultural significance in our region, it has also gained popularity in Western fashion, with brands incorporating its silhouette and elements into contemporary clothing styles, and even churning out exclusive collections of kaftans and abayas, often sold around Ramadan, for their Middle Eastern clients.
