teamLab Is Opening a Permanent Borderless Museum in Jeddah

The first-ever Middle East location

In a world where art and technology seamlessly blend, international art collective teamLab thrives. With members ranging from artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects, the interdisciplinary group stands at the forefront of navigating the intersection of art, science, technology, and the natural world. Founded in Tokyo in 2001, teamLab has now partnered with The Saudi Ministry of Culture to establish a permanent teamLab Borderless museum in Jeddah.

This innovative museum, which will overlook the Historic District of Jeddah— a UNESCO World Heritage Site—, will showcase over 50 experiential artworks crafted by teamLab, utilizing digital technology to redefine artistic boundaries. Set to be situated on the shores of Alarbaeen Lagoon, the immersive digital museum marks the first permanent teamLab Borderless museum in the Middle East, and the first-ever digital art museum in Jeddah.

Once completed, visitors to teamLab Borderless are urged to approach the experience with an open mind. The artworks transcend traditional boundaries, with installations and artworks moving between rooms, potentially interacting with one another, and blurring the lines between individual pieces to create a seamless, borderless world. Here, visitors aren’t mere observers but become an integral part of the artwork itself.

Since its inception in Tokyo in June 2018, teamLab Borderless has captivated audiences, welcoming over 2.3 million annual visitors— including the likes of Will Smith, Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and David Beckham— and earning recognition as the most visited museum by a single art group.

The museum, which is still under construction, plays a key role in the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s initiative within the Jeddah Historic District revitalization project, an initiative aimed to preserve the district’s historical essence, while transforming it into a dynamic hub of culture. The new teamLab Borderless Jeddah will no doubt enrich the Kingdom’s cultural landscape, while attracting a diverse crowd of art lovers, tech enthusiasts, and tourists seeking novel experiences and “Instagrammable” spots.

The official opening dates have yet to be announced, so watch this space.
