This Is Why Kylian Mbappé Is Beefing a Kebab Shop

a different kind of sports beef

We’ve seen our share of odd disputes involving celebrities over the years, but the latest one takes the cake: Kylian Mbappé has found himself in an unexpected clash with a kebab shop owner. Yes, you heard that right, as this week, it has been reported that the 25-year-old footballer submitted a legal notice to the holder of an eatery in France.

According to emerging reports, Mbappé’s lawyer, Delphine Verheyden, sent an official request to Mohammed Henni, founder of KLUB KEBAB, asking him to modify the description of one of the restaurant’s signature sandwiches within a week before lodging a formal complaint. On Uber Eats as well as many other food delivery apps, one may encounter a peculiar comparison between the bread of the Turkish gyro and the football star’s skull, prompting legal action to nullify the humorous-yet-unpleasant association.

Claiming that the sandwich’s bakery-made bun is as “round as Mbappé’s head,” the fast-food owner expressed disbelief at the idea of facing a lawsuit over what he deemed a trivial matter. In a TikTok video posted on his official social media accounts, Henni reminded the French national team’s captain that he wasn’t the only player to have been the target of a cheeky one-liner. Amongst the items featured on his menu, a savory crêpe is described as being “as heavy as [Dimitri] Payet,” playfully nodding to the former Marseille and West Ham midfielder’s weight. Despite this, the 36-year-old player has not voiced any objections to this quiet particular culinary tribute.

“I never thought a player of his caliber had time to think about me. (…) He took time and money to attack me. I’m not hurting anyone, I just make jokes,” he commented on the situation in a post.  “Aren’t you ashamed? Is that all you have to do? Suing me, filing a complaint against me all for this? For something next to nothing? I’m shocked. (…) I can’t believe it.,” he added.

For context, Henni’s rise in the food service industry owes much to his online presence. Before venturing into entrepreneurship, the French-born Algerian chef gained widespread recognition as an eccentric football commentator on social media, following his boyhood team Marseille through its regular ups and downs via outlandish post-match videos. That said, it’s probably his allegiance to his Southern French side that explains the jab directed at Mbappé, who happens to play for his rivals. As the saga is anything but near over, only time will tell how this ironic legal affair will ultimately unfold.
