Will We Get a Third Season of ‘Euphoria’? Everything We Know

not any time soon by the sounds of it…

Euphoria’s much-anticipated third season might take longer than expected to hit our screens— if it ever does. This week, media outlets shared unfortunate updates regarding the next installment of HBO’s hit series. Per circulating reports, the show would be facing significant delays following numerous disagreements between showrunners, members of the cast, and production teams regarding the future of the teen drama’s storyline.

A recent story published by Variety revealed that Euphoria season 3 has been put on halt and that “no one at HBO is at all sure [whether it] will ever come to fruition.” According to the publication, the show’s creative director and executive producer, Sam Levinson, had his pitches met with serious contention by several key stakeholders of the series. In his submitted drafts, the Award-winning filmmaker suggested a five-year-long leap into the future where Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi’s respective roles as Cassie and Nate would take precedence over Zendaya’s Rue— Euphoria’s lead star. With “meaty arcs” exclusively reserved for Sweeney and Elordi, the series’ central focus would be moving away from the Dune actress’ character, shifting the narrative as we have known it so far.

According to Levinson’s vision, Rue would now be working as a private detective in a surprising turn of events — a potential scenario that was allegedly “vetoed” by the American television network itself. Alternatively, Zendaya presented her own ideas on how the storyline could develop. In her version, Rue would be well into her twenties, sober from all substances, as well as a surrogate mother; a potential script that was also quickly dismissed.

Amidst all the creative chaos, it was rumored that HBO probed the idea of distancing Levinson from Euphoria as a whole. However, sources told Variety that despite all the disagreements, the cast was genuinely dedicated to continuing the show with the 39-year-old on board.

Almost two years after season two of Euphoria premiered, the show’s slow progress can also be attributed to many other exogenous factors, including the untimely passing of Angus Cloud last year and producer Kevin Turen who died suddenly of heart failure in November. With so much negative commotion surrounding the series, it’s as if the drama behind the scenes is rivaling the intensity of what’s on screen, and given the number of saddening setbacks, viewers might find themselves seeking their dose of escapism elsewhere while the production team takes time to regroup.
