And for those of us with more melanin-rich complexions, the struggle to find the right product for our skin tone may have gotten significantly easier over recent years, but figuring out our undertone is still understudied. There’s a big misconception that all darker complexions have cool undertones for example, when in fact, they can be either cool or warm.

It’s imperative to figure out your skintone before buying any new products, and this is especially the case when it comes to choosing the right nude lipstick. Choosing one with the wrong undertone can leave you looking grey.

Figuring it out is pretty simple: if you’re cool-toned you’ll have to choose a lipstick that counteracts your pink to blue-ish undertones, not compliment. And if you’re warm-toned, you’ll need to pick a more blue-ish based lip colour to neutralise the yellows in your skin.
