Saint Levant and MC Abdul’s New Song Is an Ode to Gaza

A heartfelt cultural fusion

The track begins with the rhythmic pulse of a traditional tabla weaving seamlessly with the unmistakable strains of an Arabic guitar riff, as cascading strings paint a vivid symphony of cultural fusion. This harmonious prelude sets the stage for the arrival of Saint Levant and MC Abdul, whose new collaborative song and accompanying visuals shot in Jordan serve as a soul-stirring homage to Palestine.

Dubbed Deira, the track name is derived from Saint Levant’s (born Marwan Abdelhamid) familial connection to Gaza’s architectural heritage through the Al Deira Hotel, a boutique hotel overlooking the beach that has been regularly used by foreign journalists covering Gaza since its construction in 2000. The hotel, which was labeled “the Gaza Strip’s diamond in the rough,” by Time Magazine, has endured years of war and destruction that has plagued the Occupied Territories in the last 24-years— a symbolic testament to the unwavering resilience of Palestinian people. Through Deira, Saint Levant skillfully delves into themes of identity, masterfully intertwining his Algerian and Palestinian roots, infusing the track with layers of personal narrative and collective history.

Yet, it is the addition of 15-year-old MC Abdul that propels the track to new heights. His verses, laden with the weight of inner conflict, and unwavering love for his homeland, pierce through the music’s layers. With raw sincerity, he proclaims, “Even though I travel the world, there is nothing like Palestine” — a poignant ode to his people, to Gaza, and to the indomitable spirit of resilience.
