10 series to watch post iftar

With only a few days left until the onset of Ramadan, many are getting themselves prepared for the spiritually cleansing holy month. Set to begin around Mar. 11, Ramadan is that time of the year where Muslims all around the world slow down and participate in a much-needed cleanse of the soul. With delightful iftars, nourishing suhoor family gatherings, and the overall comforting spirit of the month to anticipate, there’s yet another aspect of Ramadan to look forward to. We’re talking about the abundance of Ramadan series that are as communal as they are entertaining set to grace our TV screens. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the most eagerly-awaited Egyptian TV shows set to air this Ramadan.

The Arabic adaptation of American crime-comedy TV series Good Girls, which follows the story of three mothers gone bad who decide to plan a heist that involves robbing a supermarket starring Christina Hendricks and Mae Whitman. The Arabic adaptation houses a notable cast including Ghada Adel, Jamila Awad, and Fadwa Abed, among others. 

‘Massar Egbari’

The suspenseful drama is considered to be one of the most highly anticipated series this Ramadan. Directed by Nadine Khan, produced by United Company, and written by Amin Gamal, Masar Egbary features a dynamic cast of young actors from Ahmed Dash and  Essam Omar to the talented May Elghety and Basma, among others. 

‘Al Kabeer Awi’ Part 8

A Ramadan staple that is bound to make you laugh after iftar, Al Kabeer Awi is back yet again for its eighth season. The iconic series set in a village in Upper-Egypt, is set to make us laugh as actor Ahmed Mekky effortlessly exudes a one-a-kind humor playing both Al Kabeer and his American brother Johnny. The show also stars other comedic actors including Bayomi Fouad, Mohamed Salam, and more.  

‘Al Hashashin’ (Order of Assasins) 

Al Hashashin, written by Abdel Rahim Kamal, is set in the 11th century and revolves around the story of Hassan al-Sabbah, the leader of the Hashashin group, a sect of Ismaili Shia Muslims who lived in the mountains of Persia and Syria between the 11th and 13th centuries.  Leading the ensemble cast  is Karim Abdel Aziz, who portrays the role of al-Sabbah. Meanwhile, Nicolas Mouawad will take on the role of the legendary poet, mathematician, and astronomer Omar Khayyam. The series also stars prominent actors Fathy Abdel Wahab, Ahmed Eid, Omar El Shenawy, Gihan El-Shamashergy, Islam Gamal, Youssef Hashish, Noor Ehab, and Myrna Nour El-Din, promising power-packed performances.

‘Embratoreyet Meem’

Bringing an old classic Egyptian TV-show back to life, Embratoreyet Meem (Empire of Meem) is based on a literary work by the celebrated late author Ehsan Abdel Qudous and adapted for the screen by Mohamed Sleiman Abdel Malek.  This series weaves a complex story of conflicts within a family and the ambitious rise of a new empire. Leading the series is the powerhouse father-son duo of Khaled El Nabawy and Noor El Nabawy. Their collaboration brings an extra layer of intrigue, especially with Noor playing the role of Marwan Abu Almajd, son of Khaled’s character. 

‘Al Nesbet Moshahda’

Directed by Egyptian filmmaker Yasmine Ahmed Kamel and written by Samar Taher, Al Nesbet Moshahda is based on the true events of the life of Shaimaa, a girl from a humble background who is obsessed with TikTok. The series will feature an ensemble of talented Egyptian stars including Salma Abu Deif,  Entesar, Laila Zaher, Farah Youssef, Mohamed Mahmoud, Hind Abdel Halim, Mohamed Shaheen, and Islam Ibrahim.

‘Lahzet Ghadab’

Actress Saba Mubarak continues her series of successes, appearing in the 2024 Ramadan season with her new series Lahzet Ghadab, written by Mohab Tarek and directed by Abdel Aziz El-Nagar.The series also stars Mohamed Shahin, Aly Kassem, Sarrah Abd El-Rahman, and Mohamed Fareed.

Set to be screened during the second half of Ramadan, the Egyptian series takes place in a light social context and tells the story of a girl named Farawla, the daughter of a real estate guard in Zamalek and a professional Turkish coffee cup reader. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she becomes a sales representative in an international company specializing in selling accessories that promise to bring positive energy, money, and happiness. The cast includes renowned Egyptian actress Nelly Karim starring alongside Haggag Abdulazim, Mostafa Khater, Sedky Sakhr, Ola Roshdy, and more.

Directed by renowned Egyptian filmmaker Madgy Abo Omeira and written by Medhat El Adl, the series is adapted from the novel of the same name by Egyptian writer Ibrahim Abdelmegeed, which tells the tale of a grandfather and his troubled relationship with his grandchildren. The 15 episode series will feature Egyptian actors Mayan El Sayed,Yehia El Fakhranany, Sayed Ragab, and plenty more.
