Saudi Arabia has certainly been making its mark in every industry, be it the Kingdom’s ongoing football signings with renowned players, an array of music festivals set to take place within the upcoming year, or an arts scene that continues to set its precedence. Now, the Gulf country has made its way into the streaming service that many cannot simply live without with the first Saudi TV series produced by Netflix.
On Sept. 6, the US streaming giant will be airing a brand new original comedy six-part series titled Bait Tahir (Tahir’s House), which follows a dysfunctional family as they attempt to revive their failing fish shop in Jeddah, which is facing foreclosure, into a thriving business.
Directed by Sultan al-Abdulmohsen, Bait Tahir stars Mohammad Bakhsh (Jumaa), the father and the head of the household, al-Hashimi al-Faisal (Yousef), the passionate yet unlucky son, Mohammed alFaza (Karim) Yousef’s partner- in-crime and nurturing sibling, Tik-Tok star Joud Sofyani (Azizah) the intelligent and determined daughter, and Naimah Ahmad (Lutfiya) the fearless grandmother.
The series aims to capture the entrepreneurial spirit of the country whilst exploring themes of sacrifice, brotherhood, and familial bonds all the while never steering away from a comedic undertone. “Creating Tahir’s House was a journey to blur the lines between reality and fiction. We wanted to build a world that — even in its comic and made-up moments — feels genuine and authentic,” Abdulmohsen told Arab News.
