Tyler, The Creator Advocates For Palestine and Congo at Coachella

Free Palestine and Congo!

In a world where celebrities often steer clear of politics to maintain broad appeal, Tyler, The Creator’s decision to sport pins of the flags of Palestine and Congo during his performance at Coachella 2024 over the weekend was a bold declaration. As one of the headliners at this year’s music festival, held in the sprawling fields of Indio, California, Tyler knew his appearance would command widespread attention. But it was his choice of accessories that conveyed a message far beyond his music.

The rapper, producer, and designer, who is known for his vibrant and often controversial persona, has never shied away from making a statement. This time, his message was clear: he stands in solidarity with the oppressed communities in Palestine and Congo. This move comes at a time when Palestinians are facing a genocide, making his stance all the more significant.

The pins were visible as he performed hits from his latest album on April 13 under the desert sky, where tens of thousands gathered to see him. Adding to the spectacle, the rapper brought out a series of other high-profile artists, including A$AP Rocky and Childish Gambino, who coincidentally were also sporting the colors of the Palestinian flag, as fans were quick to notice. US rapper Redveil, who was also invited on stage, called for a ceasefire in Gaza during his set at Tyler, the Creator’s performance and displayed the names of Palestinian children killed by Israeli attacks in the besieged enclave. He also rallied the audience with a “Free Palestine” chant.

The performance comes six-months after Israel began its bombardment of Gaza. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been at the center of international discourse for decades, with “Free Palestine” emerging as a rallying cry for those advocating for Palestinian sovereignty. Similarly, by wearing a “Congo” pin, Tyler brought attention to another region rife with conflict and humanitarian crises, often overlooked in the mainstream media.

Fans took to social media to praise the artist’s choice of accessories, commending his courage in using his platform for advocacy.

Coachella has long been more than just a musical venue, offering artists a vast platform to express themselves not only through music but also through fashion and personal statements. Tyler’s political expression on Friday night challenges his peers and fans to consider the roles artists play in global political discourses. Should artists use their platforms to highlight issues of social justice, or should they remain neutral? This question is particularly pertinent in today’s hyper-connected world, where celebrities can speak directly to millions of fans instantly.

By choosing to spotlight Palestine and Congo, Tyler, The Creator, aligns himself with a tradition of artist-activists who believe that the power of music and fame can and should be used to foster social change. Whether one agrees with his positions or not, it is clear that his influence extends beyond music, prompting conversations that might not otherwise occur in such public spaces. As we reflect on his performance and the symbols he chose to display, it becomes apparent that for Tyler, and for many others, art and politics are inextricably linked.
