Asma Al Thani Becomes First Qatari Woman to Scale Everest

An inspiration

Asma Al Thani

On May 27th Sheikha Asma Al Thani, became the first Qatari woman to scale the highest summit in the world, Mount Everest.

After months of training and weeks of scaling the 8.8km mountain, Her Highness reached the peak with record-breaking climber Nirmal Purja. This was part of her larger mission to empower women and young people in the region to fight stereotypes and achieve their goals.

On her instagram she wrote “Don’t be shy to dream big. Once you do, you have a commitment to do everything you can to make it happen. Where there is a will there is a way!”, this statement seems to come from the heart, as she had to call off her previous attempt to scale the mountain due to adverse weather conditions.

Sheikha Asma is no stranger to record breaking in 2014 she became the first Qatari woman to scale Mount Kilimanjaro and in 2018 she was the first ever Qatari to ski the last degree at the North Pole.

The 32-year-old hopes to conquer the Explorers Grand Slam, which requires her to reach both the North and South Pole, as well as climb all seven summits of the highest mountains in the world (Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Vinson, Puncak Jaya, and Mount Elbrus). Al Thani has now achieved three of the nine Explorers Grand Slam challenges, having climbed Aconcagua in 2019.

With her sights set high, it’s no surprise to see her working with the Qatari Olympic Committee, with them commenting on her instagram picture.
