Arguably one of the most talked about events in the realm of fashion, the Met Gala has over the years turned into a real spectacle of red carpet fashion as attendees bring their A-game to the steps of the legendary Metropolitan Museum of Art. Held annually since 1948, the annual fundraising gala is attended by the crème de la crème of entertainment, fashion, and art, making it a star-studded affair that is religiously watched by fans and thoroughly dissected by members of the press. The gathering, which traditionally takes place on the first Monday of May, also serves as a charity that raises funds for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, a New York-based foundation that documents fashion from the 1400s up until today.
Without exception, each year is remembered for its overarching theme, which (most) attendees loyally follow. Aside from the red carpet fashion, what happens at the Gala (or after parties) keeps the Internet talking for days, weeks, and even years to come. From Rihanna’s iconic yellow Guo Pei dress to Zendaya’s real-life Cinderella transformation, every ceremony is punctuated by plenty of memorable moments that become emblematic of that year’s edition– except for Jason Derulo’s yearly mishap of falling down the event’s red-tinted stairs.

Below, everything there is to know about fashion’s biggest night.
When is it happening?
The 2024 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 2 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Considered a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, it has traditionally been timed to mark the opening of its annual fashion exhibition.
What is the theme of this year?
Far less controversial than last edition, where attendees were expected to pay homage to late German designer Karl Lagerfeld, this year the theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” According to Vogue, this means the red carpet and coinciding museum exhibition will honor “masterpieces of fashion,” technology, and “the multi-sensory facets of a garment.” The Met’s adjacent exhibit will be centered around 50 historically significant pieces that are too delicate to be worn again alongside around 250 items drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection which spans over 400 years of fashion history.
Who will host the Met Gala 2024?
As of now, no co-chairs or hosts have been announced, following last year’s stellar line-up, which included Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, and Roger Federer, among others.
Who is attending this year’s Met Gala?
Likewise, the guest list is top secret until the evening before the event. But you can expect some of the biggest names in the industry to be there. Regular attendees include Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, and more.
Where can I watch the 2024 Met Gala?
The event will, as per usual, be live-streamed on Vogue’s own website and social media pages. Last year, Vogue live-streamed the Met Gala on its website, beginning from 2:30 A.M. GST. Last year, the coverage was hosted by Hamish Bowles, Vanessa Hudgens, and La La Anthony.
