Sharjah Bans NYE Fireworks and Celebrations in Solidarity with Gaza

Respect to Sharjah

With only a few days left until 2024, many are gearing up for the New Year. The UAE is renowned for its grandiose New Year’s Eve festivities, featuring dazzling fireworks against the backdrop of its iconic skylines and picturesque landscapes. However, breaking from tradition this year, the emirate of Sharjah has chosen to forgo the customary celebrations in solidarity with Gaza.

In a commendable display of solidarity, The Sharjah police issued a statement prohibiting fireworks, celebrations, and displays, stating the decision was aimed at “expressing genuine solidarity and humanitarian cooperation with the brothers in the Gaza strip.” Additionally, they called on all institutions and individuals to cooperate and adhere to the ban. The post emphasized that legal measures would be taken against those who violate the ban.

Prior to the restrictions, three New Year’s Eve celebrations hosting a display of fireworks were set to take place across the emirate. The announcement aligns seamlessly with the unwavering stance of HH Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah, who has consistently and vocally advocated for solidarity with Palestine. In a previous poignant statement, the ruler declared, “Your calamity is our calamity,” reinforcing his unwavering support for the people of Palestine and their struggle. He added, “We support them, and we stand by them.”

As we reflect on this decision, it is essential to acknowledge the gravity of the situation in Gaza, where today marks 82 days of ongoing genocide. With a death toll nearing 21,000, thousands still buried under the rubble, and millions forcibly displaced from their homes, Sharjah’s decision to cancel New Year’s Eve festivities serves as a powerful testament to the emirate’s commitment to compassion, solidarity, and the broader pursuit of justice.
