The Astronaut Wears Prada: The Italian Label Will Design NASA’s New Spacesuits

a small step for man a giant leap for fashion

It has been reported that Italian luxury label Prada will be dressing NASA’s astronauts in 2025. In partnership with American space infrastructure developer Axiom, the two are joining forces on a line of spacesuits designed to be worn during the first mission to the moon since 1972.

For the forthcoming lunar expedition, dubbed Artemis III, Prada will assist Axiom in the process of dressing NASA’s space crew. In addition to adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the astronauts’ attires, the Italian house will also work on developing solutions to protect materials and fabrics from the harsh environments they will be exposed to while ensuring durability, performance, and sophistication at all times.

Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from legacy spacesuits,”  said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space in a press release.

Echoing on his statement, Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Marketing Director, added: “We are honored to be a part of this historic mission with Axiom Space. Our decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology, and design know-how – which started back in the ‘90s with Luna Rossa challenging for the America’s Cup – will now be applied to the design of a spacesuit for the Artemis era. It is a true celebration of the power of human creativity and innovation to advance civilization.”

Named after the Greek goddess of chastity and hunting, the mission is expected to take off in December 2025 and is slated to become the first expedition to land a woman as well as a person of color on the moon.

The first of its kind, the cross-disciplinary collaboration is quite unexpected although it marks a symbolic convergence of style and technology. As humans set their sights on the moon for the first time in over 50 years, we’d like to believe that the moment we step foot on it, we might as well do so dripped out from head to toe.
