Something big is happening across the world. Anti-black racism is finally actively being called out online and on the streets—and no one is spared.
In just a matter of days, Refinery 29’s Christene Barberich and Adam Rapoport from Bon Appétit stepped down from their position as editor-in-chief of their respective publications following accusations of racism and discrimination. Leandra Medine Cohen, founder of cult independent platform Man Repeller, also declared having “failed” and decided to step back. Even Anna Wintour has admitted that Vogue has been hurtful and intolerant and apologized for her “mistakes”.
Black voices are saying it loud and clear: they’re exhausted, and it’s time for a radical change in politics, media, culture and the arts. It’s simple and straightforward – white people must give up a seat at the table and amplify the voices of black people.
In the same vein, Netflix has just launched a Black Lives Matter collection, highlighting 50 titles that explore injustice and the African-American experience.
The selection includes Oscar-winning Barry Jenkins’ film Moonlight, documentaries like 13th and James Baldwin’s I am Not Your Negro as well as shows like Orange is the New Black and Dear White People as well as Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods.
“When we say ‘Black Lives Matter,’ we also mean ‘Black storytelling matters’. With an understanding that our commitment to true, systemic change will take time — we’re starting by highlighting powerful and complex narratives about the Black experience,” reads Netflix’s statement.
